Doctor Strange knew what he was doing and Tony Stark is one of the most important key in winning the war against Thanos. Remember that he specifically said he wouldn't trade Stark and Parker's lives for the time stone but when Thanos stabbed Tony and was about to kill him ,he gave up and after the snap, he told Stark “It's the only way” before vanishing.
