Marvel Captain America Endgame signature shirt

The Superhero Registration Act (Stark's side) passes.  As a result of this, the 50 State Initiative is launched.  Basically, this gives every state a group of superpowered protectors.  Captain America turns himself in to SHIELD custody, believing that this would be the only way to stop the bloodshed caused by his dissent.  On the orders of the Red Skull, Cap is assassinated.  It was first believed that he was killed by Crossbones (whom you'll know from Winter Soldier as Brock Rumlow), but Rumlow just grazed him while Agent 13 (Sharon Carter) actually dealt the coup de grace (she was brainwashed at the time by Dr. Faustus).
