I think you may be onto something here. Mental disorders do indeed fall along a spectrum and each of them is undoubtedly resultant of some sort of trauma. Trauma is at its core the sole ingredient needed to evoke a dissociative response - the frequency and severity of the trauma dictate the nature of the disorder manifested, ranging anywhere from common anxiety and depression all the way up to the heartbreakingly severe presentation of DID (dissociative identity disorder). Dissociation is an ego-defense mechanism. The more chronic and severe the trauma, the more intense the traumatic response.
