I faced the same issues, but grabbed the bull by the horns much earlier. All three of my children are very bright and athletic, but I encountered the same things you mention when my daughter was first walking and speaking fairly articulately, I guess at about 3-1/2 to 4 years old, when our oldest sone was 5 or 6. People who'd come by the house, or at family get togethers or other social occasions would ask our son about a book he was holding or sports and compliment him on his vocabulary or reading ability or for catching something they'd tossed him.
