A cell in the retina might be thought of as a discrete pixel, but the activity on individual receptor cells isn’t identical to what we perceive. We perceive a kind of “blurred” version of the light pattern arriving at the retina — both spatially and temporally. And intriguingly, this blurring can actually improve resolution.
