I feel there's a telepathic connection between the direwolves. When one of their own is in trouble, the other siblings sense it. So when Lady, Sansa's direwolf is killed, Summer along with his direwolf siblings senses it and that is how Bran wakes up, knowing something is wrong, knowing that his (Summer’s) sibling was hurt, or worse, killed.
