At the time of this trade, Eric Staal was far from the best player on the team, and was probably the worst player in the league at his salary point. His production had been erratic at best and unforgivably lazy at worst for the past several seasons. Staal was a team top point scorer in two recent losing seasons, but there is more to it than points (he was something like a minus-13 in the last seasons, which is really unacceptable for a marquee player).
