Pyrogens can be endogenous or exogenous, but ultimately cause the same effect - they reset the bodies thermostat to a higher temperature. Bacterial endotoxins and other microbial products, antigen-antibody complexes, viruses and synthetic polynucleotides, incompatible blood and blood products (just to name a few) are exogenous pyrogens - our immune system reacts to them and produces endogenous pyrogens.
